I can’t write about fairy tales without mentioning Susan Bobby, author of Fairy Tales Reimagined and professor of my Fairy Tales class, who introduced me to many of the authors on this list. His most recent works include Fantasy, Myth and the Measure of Truth: Tales of Pullman, Lewis, Tolkien, MacDonald and Hoffmann and two volumes of collected essays entitled Death and Fantasy and Fantasy, Art and Life. Do not use “Picture books” or “Picture books for children” as search terms, which will NOT find many Cinderella books for you.
